An Independent Voice for Black Labor.

About the Northern California Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (NCCBTU)

The Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU) was founded in 1972 to serve as the independent voice of Black labor, uniting workers across the United States and Canada to advocate for racial and economic justice. The Northern California chapter (NCCBTU), established over 41 years ago by trailblazer Geraldine M. Johnson, continues this mission, championing the rights and interests of Black workers in the Bay Area and beyond.

Our work is built on strong partnerships with labor unions, community-based organizations, and faith-based groups. Here are a few examples of our ongoing collaborations:

  • Advocating for Local Hire initiatives in the East Bay and San Francisco.

  • Partnering with the NAACP to promote quality education for students.

  • Working alongside the Baptist Church to mobilize senior voters in our community.

  • Training Cypress Mandela Training Center students in Toxic Awareness and Cardiovascular Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) through our Community Action and Response Against Toxic (CARAT) Team.

NCCBTU remains committed to amplifying the voices of Black workers and fostering meaningful change in our communities through advocacy, education, and solidarity.
